I've been looking for a type set quality Merc for some time now. It was one of the first "old" coins my dad showed to me as a kid that stuck with me. I'll reveal in 48 hrs. Edited by eternallogan 03/29/2019 6:38 pm

What exactly is your point/goal here? I this coin yours? If so, why do you want our grade opinions? Are you not happy with the grade of this coin? It's a nice coin! !

66fsb. well struck but late die state given the pronounced surface metal flow lines. nice coin.

I try not to go by the grade on the slab, but rather what I perceive the grade to be, if that makes sense. So to me, the grade isn't so important when choosing a coin. And NS, where do you see the hits, just curious?

i didn't say there were any hits, but I see a couple to the right of the mouth of liberty, after A in AMERICA and on the mintmark. also one on the middle bands of the fasces.

Yup, a common date, but still a very nice coin I'll say MS66FSB.

Quote: if that makes sense. So to me, the grade isn't so important No, it doesn't make sense. If the grade isn't important, why are you asking us? Unless it's a 67, 68 or 69 and you want to break it out and re-submit it, I wouldN'T worry about it. It's a nice coin.

For example, I've seen a good amount of AU-58 coins that look much nicer (and I'd rather own) than low-MS examples. Same with UNC coins to an extent. The grade is not always indicative of eye appeal, location of the hits, and sharpness of the coin, as well as other factors like NS kindly pointed out. Plus even top-end grading services have a little bit of variance. I don't plan on cracking and resubmitting, but I still like to hear your guys' opinions of the coin as a whole. All opinions matter, especially when I'm choosing one for my type set.

Okay guys, I get it. I guess I was just reading to much into the conversation. Most folks just say please grade the coin or grade the grader, period. The coin is a Mint State FSB something (IMO). I can't tell the difference between a 64 and a 67 anyway. Still a nice coin! ! P.S. Yes, buy the coin, not the slab.

well struck up. some flow lines due to later state die. the only minor flaw I see is the tiny nick on the center crossbar. MS67/68 range. nice coin for type set

Hits on the A in America and on the cheek aren't visible at 20x magnification. Only a shadow and a wee bit of discoloration, but I don't see hits. Sorry for the misleading pics. Here's some crappy example photos of those areas.
