Looks like top one is a Small Date and the other is a Large Date.

Note the remark around the motto on being closer or further away from the rim.
Large date has the motto closer. The 'L on LIBERTY is closer to the rim.
Small date has the motto further away from the rim.The 'L on LIBERTY is further from the rim.

Highest point of hair: On the large date less detail there. On the small date more detail on that area.

Why doesn't the 1974 large and small date get the same treatment in coin books as 1960, 1982, etc?

Thanks for the visuals, Coop! I've had problems differentiating these, whereas I have no problems with the 60 or 82. One other thing I've used is the fact that the crossbar on the 7 is slightly tilted on the SD. I think the distance of IGWT and Liberty from rim will be very helpful.

It could be that there is so little difference in the '74 dates that the album makers didn't feel the necessity of inclusion. Or it could be that the LD/SD 1974 is a fairly recent discovery.

Are you talking about the bottom of the '97'? That looks like a contact mark on that area?

Thinking I read somewhere the production rate of both ODV's displaying Type 1 and Type 2 strikes were high in numbers, making neither a rarity.

Type 1 large date. FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY: Light to moderate extra thickness can be seen on the date, LIBERTY and the motto. All Type 1 dies will show this extra thickness to some degree or another.

Thanks, Doug.
