I found a Indian Head Buffalo nickel and havnt quite fully revealed the date yet but it appears through evaluating close it could be a 26. I know for sure its an S mint...but the date is a bit off a challenge. Can anyone identify anything distinctive that tells the year without having to clean or use chemicals?

Ouch! If I squint real hard and turn my head sideways I think I can see a number "1". The coin looks like it has already been acid treated or was in a fire.

Here in Texas, we'd call that one toast. Keep on looking.

The coin is actually red on both obverse and reverse. With proper cleaning it can be a better coin and possibly see the date afterwards but dont want to ruin it cleaning more than it has been through its course of time.

I wanted to *note* that the pics I posted have been edited to help bring out certain images. Its not the original pictures. The coin is actually dirty red.

IMO you have nothing to lose by soaking it in vinegar and raising the date. Personally I like using vinegar and salt.

If it's red then it's got a corrosion/environmental damage problem and NOTHING you can do is gonna make the coin any better. You may be able to bring a date out but it's value is in the toilet.

It is a worthless cull in my opinion.

I read that any condition you find these cpins especially in particular years, thats its worth more than face value. I read that the lowest mintage was produced in history of U.S. in that year where less than 1 million of these coins were produced. If that date can be revealed better even if its the last 2 digits of the date then its above face value. Idk... Ill keep just incase even if its worthless.
Rest in Peace

Paul , with all do respect that Nickel could be any date . I can't make out a darn thing ! Your best bet is to acid treat just the date area and see what happens .
