Hey all,

I've been interested in OLD coins (like 1940 and earlier) and some of the old coins I'm interested in (1900 and earlier) I couldn't find in a thousand years by roll hunting. My question is: How do you guys get your coins that are too old to be in circulation. The only place I ever see them is being sold by someone... How? Metal detecting? Attics? What?

Thanks,

Phil

occasionally an old liberty head nickel or indian head from 1900 will pop up in circulation, but besides that and going to a coin dealer you can trade for coins, ask old relatives, or metal detect. Coins found through metal detecting are often low grade and sometimes corroded since theyve been in the ground for over a hundred years

I'm not roll a hunter. Although in my previous jobs when I handled cash I'd always search through rolls that I would crack open, unless it was busy. I've never found anything pre 1900. As for pre 1940, I think you have a good chance of finding some lincolns, nickels, occasionally a Mercury dime. That's what I've found in circulation. Most commonly I would say is lincolns. I don't have many 1800's. All the ones I do have I purchased through buddies of mine or through a dealer.

I have had good luck at estate sales and garage sales. But if you are looking for a coin worth anything pre 1900s. Your best deal will be on sites like this one after you hit your 50 posts(vary honest people and prices)and also e-bay. Just be careful when shopping. Go out and buy a world coin book and also learn about grading, grading companies. It will help you how to spot fake coins and you can find or buy coins that haven't been graded yet witch are usually a lot cheaper. Good luck and welcome to CCF

Every person who you meet has coins in the jewelry boxes sock drawers or piggy banks .

I have people bring me coins at the coffee shop to ask about selling them , or to get an Idea of value .

I never offer to buy but I never refuse if the coins are offered forsale even if I'm not exactly in the market for that particular coin .

I always give a fair price and I always tell people exactly what their coin is and what its worth .

it took me 5 or 6 years to develope the trust but at times its well worth the effort .

.....I'll second that one !....
Also, I go to a lot of "coin auctions" or "estate auctions".....easily found on the internet in your area.
Be careful at these though, you need to be informed on any particular coin you bid on so that you won't "overpay" too badly !
I've picked up a lot of nice coins and other material over the years this way....

Me too. Garage/yard/estate sales are great but as I keep telling people you have to ASK. Most of the time coins are not put out as an item for sale due to theft. If you ask, you may be shocked at what is there. Same with flea markets. Besides from change in the old days, I now primarily acquire coins from the above. I go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a month but the most coins and the best deals are usually from just plain old people. Some time ago I worked in place where practically half the employees came from other countries. So I let it be known I collect coins. I got bombarded with coins from all over the world and free. People just kept on giving me them. Some had relatives send them even more. The problem with this is I do not collect foreign coins. I didn't want to hurt their feeling so I just kept on taking them. Presently have several boxes of them and very little idea of what they are.
However, I did acquire a lot of USA coins that were old from the same people. What suprized me was the people from other countries that had relatives back home with some of our old coins and didn't know what to do with them.
For several years now I've been buying Mercury dimes from a guy at the flea market. He used to sell them for $1/each. If you bought a lot of them he would lower the prices. I usually paid about 0.90 each and at times even less.

Believe it or not, I have had good luck on ebay. It seems that you have to look for "mixed lots". For example I got a lot that included a flying eagle, Two Cent Piece, both varieties of Three Cent pieces, a Shield nickel, Seated dime and Seated quarter for around 50 dollars. While I don't collect early coins, I think this was a great find.

Sniping ebay auctions.
I always count the shipping into my price.
Like if I want the coin for 15 and the shipping is 3 dollars.
I wont bid above 12ish.

I usually stick to the coin shows, but when my boy gets old enough I might start doing the garage/yard sale tour again. I am hoping his cuteness will score me some nice finds; but worst case I get to spend some "man" time with him!
