@leipeneier, first welcome to CCF. Second, since you mention Byzantine coins, I'm assuming that you are interested in medieval Bulgarian coins. If so, then my go to is Youroukova and Penchev, "Byzantine Medieval Coins and Seals". It took me a little while to find a copy and functions (for me) mainly as a picture book as my Bulgarian is non-existent. For coins minted in 1601 AD or more recent, then you could use one of Krause's Standard Catalogs of World Coins.

I have a copy of
'Coins of Medieval Europe', by Philip Grierson.
Has a few notes and references to Bulgarian copies of medieval era Byzantine coins.
A very scholarly work but most of the huge bibliography is in either French or German.

One of those references (in English), is
'Coinage of Cilician Armenia', by P.Z. Bedoukian, publ. in New York, 1962 which may be of some help to you.
Perhaps a large public library request from another library may help track either of these two books down

Grierson's book may still be available, may be worth doing a Google or ebay search.
(publ. Seaby, London, 1991. ISBN 1 85264 058 8,
246 pages, 478 pictures of coins included in text)

I bought my copy new, about 12 years ago, cost me AU$80.
Possible that a business like Spinks in London may be able to procure a copy for you.

Covers all of European coinage history over 1,000 years from 5th to 15th century. 248 pages of the best numismatic research in a general numismatic book I have ever come across.

I have 4 volumes Krause 16th to 20th century which neatly follows on from this. Also have extensive numismatic library that extends from the invention of coinage up the start of the medieval era, as well as World coinages, up to current date.

Other relevant books that you may find interesting:-
'Gimpses of History' by Brian Hannon (around 2000 pictures of coins covering the whole of numismatic history 600 BC-1990 AD in all cultures)

'The Coin Atlas', Joe Cribb Barrie Cook and Ian Carraidice, publ. Macdonald & Co., 1990, ISBN 0-356-17486-7. (336 pages, maps, histories of countries, with hundreds of coin illustrations. Covers the whole of numismatics 600 BC to 1990.

'Historic Gold Coins of he World', by Burton Hobson. copyright 1971. Beautifully illustrated and produced. covers the whole of the history of numismatics 600 BC- 1970, in all cultures. ISBN 07137 0544 2.

Get onto the Vcoins website, and make yourself familiar with all aspects of it.
Search for coins that comply with the title of this thread. Should bring up coins that are currently for sale, to give you a good idea of current values.

I have also searched
MA Shops 'bulgarian' - an excellent price research resource.

It took me a couple years to track down a copy of Youroukova to purchase as it was published in 1990. You may have some luck with mainstream online booksellers like Amazon and abe.com, but there are also numismatic literature specialists like Charles Davis (https://www.numisbook.com/). Mine came from a website called http://www.booksfrombulgaria.com, which seemed a little sketch at the time, but Atanas was professional and efficient. As it turns out, he is listing another copy of Youroukova on his website right now.

In the meanwhile, if you would like to post pics of your coins here on CCF, I would be very happy to help you research them to arrive at an attribution.

I just sent him an email saying what I was looking for. He arranged to send me an invoice via PP and then it took about two weeks for delivery of the book.

No prob--I'm really glad to help and somewhat amazed that there is anyone else out there with enough interest in medieval Bulgarian numismatics! I hope you will post some of your coins once you feel comfortable to do so. Here are a few prior CCF threads with coins that may be of some interest:

@Spence I will show some of my coins!

Also, I haven't actually gotten a look at the Yourouvka and Penchev book but it is mostly imitations, right?

Sorry but I was away from the computer. Not sure what you mean by "imitations"? Would you like me to post a couple of pics of the pages?
