i have come across this 1942 penny that looks like it was made into a necklace but the penny look like it was made of maybe zinc or some other kind of metal. it does not magnitize, tried scratching it to see if it was coated with something and nope it digs through like its not just coated. I'm not sure what it is really thats why I am posting a picture on here in hopes someone can help me out. it was with some other old coins when I bought a storage shed. any and all info would be greatly appreciated..

Looks coated and was used as Neckless or some kind of Jewelry. I don't even think a store would take it

Looks like a "Spooned" coin. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD), not an error.

ive tried scrapping into it to see if its coated or if it would scrape off but it didnt come off and the scratch just scratched into the coin. idk in gonna cut the metal off the edges and check it out more.

to CCF. It has a band around the coin that was part of the jewelry. It has been plated with something. You should not scratch the coin to see if it was plated,if it was an error coin you just diminished its' value by at least half.

@jussme, first welcome to CCF. Second, I would echo what @john1 said about not scratching your coins. There are much less destructive methods to get at your answer. It looks to me like you coin was plated after it left the mint and then encased in a bezel. That is what the rim looks kinda funny and there is a remnant loop on top. You could remove the bezel if you wanted, but I suspect that given its condition, this cent is only worth face value.

No question it's plated. Leave well enough alone.

Not a 1942. it says 1952. It is plated and in a bezel. Probably someones birth year coin.
