When I list coins like Nero of Alexandria, I think to put it in Roman Provinces, but the ebay address says "Roman Province 100-400 AD" or something like that. So I put these in Roman Imperial. Just seems odd to me the 100-400 AD dates. |

A year or so ago I made the acquaintance of the manager of the Coins and Paper Money category at ebay. She was an approachable, enthusiastic young woman, genuinely interested in improving the site but it was readily apparent that she knew nothing at all about numismatics. She was trained in marketing and had worked for the Gap before coming to ebay. ebay values some skill sets more highly than others. It is what it is. Edited by Kushanshah

From what I can best determine,
Roman provincial coinage in Egypt Alexandria had it's beginnings around 20 BC.

I've been selling and buying on ebay since it's inception. I "work" heavily in several other collectibles and 'professional' categories. Quite obvious there are no specialists (managers) in many/most of the categories and sub-categories... And yet, we make the most of it... With respect to coins, once I determine who the 'good' dealers are (and, yes, I include the original topic poster as a good dealer :-), I skip categories and just look at their coins for sale every week. |

There are lots of good professional coin dealer businesses (large and small) from all over the World, that use ebay.  Lots of honest collectors as well.  ebay is spoiled by the fact that fraudsters also use it for clearing fake coins.  Quote (often heard): "It is what it is" Therefore 'Caveat Emptor', - that is a pity. |

Fortunately ebay is too stupid to understand the true potential of what they have They could be acquiring assets and hiring some of the best for what would be to them "chump change" Instead they are too busy trying to nickel and dime their way through quarterly earnings reports They might be the next Kodak ! (or Polaroid even !) |

OK, I wonder if the whole system would mess up if they changed the title of a category? Like in the old DOS operating system I am not sure you would want to change a name of a sub directory all the time but if it is not a problem we might consider an attempt to suggest an edit for fixing this. Right now they have Republic coins as 300 BC to 27 BC, and Imperial Coins, as 27 BC to 476 AD, and finally Byzantine Coins as 300 AD to 1400 AD. Obviously there are some issues with all of these but staying with the question at hand the first Roman Provinces were Republic Provinces in the 200's BC I believe. And that might be too confusing. So maybe we just consider suggesting changing the Provincial category to only Imperial Roman Provinces. Thus changing:
Coins & Paper Money>Coins: Ancient>Roman: Provincial (100-400 AD)
to:
Coins & Paper Money>Coins: Ancient>Roman: Provincial (27 BC-400 AD)

'Roman Provincial' for coins with Greek motifs and legends, issued in areas of Roman Republican influence, and 'Greek Imperial' for coins with Greek motifs and legends in those areas under the rule of the Roman Empire. Wildwinds and Sear reasonably agree. The dates for these two Roman epocs are sharply defined, and the coins can be easily categorized. I don't mind much, as long as I can find all of the coins in some sort of logical listing. It is somewhat harder, when a non numismatic, account driven ebay administrator confuses the categories. |

sel_691; ebay will probably agree to changing a few dates on an existing category. But if they create a new subdivision they would probably imagine a backlash from the users so they sadly would probably not entertain the major change. Major changes do happen and they do roll out new structures but it is a big deal for them when they do anything major. Your suggestions are very much more correct than what I was suggesting of course and what they currently have. As Rumsfeld said, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you want to have. But maybe we can rename a few platoons from time to time and the generals won't notice much if we get a lower ranking officer to do the switch for us etc. Clearly not a perfect world.
