I alluded to this with the 1908-S struck through a few days ago. Here is the other interesting one.

It makes me wonder if it's actually an alloy mix issue.

Looks to me like a mis annealed planchet error. If so, that'd Be really cool!

Very neat! Is it flaking off the coin or peeling?

Sorry for the delay here, PCGS slabbed it as 'Obv Struck through Foreign Object' XF45. And yeah, I bought it in 2010.

Wonder if that is a silver fragment? Almost looks like it. Very cool whatever it is.

yeah! It appears to be silver, and where did it come from? That's why I love this piece. I have a Buffalo nickel slabbed 'struck through wood'. That one too, like, what the heck?

I've seen more than a few Morgan dollars with wood stuck into them, actually lodged deep into the planchet, not sure if the wood was there in the strip when the planchet was cut out and milled, more likely just wood getting in between the die and planchet during striking and sticking to the silver as it gets hot during the coin striking process. Somewhere in one of my boxes I have a Two Cent Piece struck through wood also. No wood remains and it looks really different than the others I have that are Struck Through Grease or cloth.

They used sawdust to dry the planchets after cleaning cleaning them. A piece probably stuck to the planchet.
