As you guys know I'm not the best coin grader. I see some coins from time to time that don't have much detail but get a high grade. This is an example of that for me. I have 1954 S coins I would consider nicer than this one? I guess what I'm asking is am I missing something?

Both obverse and reverse dies look to be EDS. The strike on the reverse is crisp and attractive. The obverse strike is crisp on the elements but weak on the head. Probably due to a weaker hubbing. However it is clear of most distracting marks and blemishes sporting a few bag marks on the upper head. A strong 67RD IMO.

Eye-appeal and blazing luster overcome spots and hits all the time. I can tell is has the luster (I can see "halo luster" around the portrait) and nice fields. The reverse strike weakness STATES AMERICA and the dark patches take away eye appeal....they must be weaker in hand and soundly trumped by luster.

I tend to agree with you, based on those pictures, I'd top-out that coin at 66RD.

Here's a REAL 67 IMO.

According to PCGS Price Guide, a 1954-S MS-67RD is $125. The $300 asking price is very inflated. 67 population is 325 with 27 higher.

The only thing I see holding this one back is a small hit on the forehead!

Well, side by side it's a close call without having the coins in hand. The hit on yours probably kills it. The rev. on yours is way better! I like those die chips, if your like die chips. Still a nice looking coin. !
