I doubt that is what really happened. It if it were a clash, then why are not all the devices present? If looks to me like a die was dropped on another die that left a contact mark that transferred to this die. There is not evidence if of a full clash present. The letters are partially over the edge of the die. So I question it at this time.

"It looks to me like a die was dropped on another die that left a contact mark that transferred to this die."

Probably dropped and bounced, which accounts for the second letters. I suspect this happened during the annealing process, which is the only time the die would be soft enough to pick up details from such a relatively low-force impact.

Still a very cool variety, and not one I knew existed until ten minutes ago. Thanks for sharing and congrats to the OP on locating one in the wild.

I guess I'm just not at that level. I can't make sense of it. either the one in the article or the one here. I see the clash, looks like two clashes rotated fromt he coin device placement,
if it was a clash though, should be obverse design elements, but this looks like reverse die lettering not obverse.

Two reverse dies clashed a couple times together then they put a normal obverse/reverse set together with the clashed die to strike coins? I guess that's the mule?

I feel these were caused by dies dropped on top of each other. Before being struck or during a polishing issue. Note they are affect just certain areas of the design and not deep as a hub design would create. Some examples can be seen polished off on certain areas by die polishing:

Thus they may have tried to remove this die field disturbance. Seems to me to be just a die event. (die damage) More of a distraction rather than a variety. To me a mule die is a miss match of two different denominations on a strike by the die setup not being correct. Just a die event to me.

Nice find, Shawn and great discovery, Amy! I knew this one was out there but have never seen posted on a forum before, must be fairly rare.

Here is the link for it on Mad Die Clashes.
