The shield makes it less plain...more decorative...to my eye.

Less plain, and additionally the shield is a good design feature to assist with grading.

Isn't the 1859 design also the same as the Flying Eagle reverse design (1857-1858?)

there were a number of reverses used for patterns, I would have preferred one of those!
