To answer you question, no. That cannot happen to just any coin as that occurs during the making of the dies. If the dies are aligned then you get normal cents from the working dies, if the dies are misaligned then then you get doubled die coins from the doubled working dies. It all has to do with alignment during the making of the dies. If a coin IS DD and there are no known specimens then it would be attributed as a new find or new listing. There are a lot of DD's that have yet to be listed, from wheat cents to Memorial cents. Also, MD can and has been seen on attributed doubled dies.
