Please crop pics before posting, thanks. It is special because it is a War Nickel,35% silver. It does have damage though so probably only worth melt value. Is it any type of variety? John1
During 1942-1945 the US changed the composition of nickels to include silver so the normal metals could be used in the war effort. The mint mark was placed above Monticello on the REV and was the first time the Philly mint actually put a letter for their mint mark on a US coin. The absenxe of mint mark had always identified a coin as being made in Philly.
Not all 1942s were " War Nickels" as these special issue coins are called. A non-War nickel 1942 will not have the large mint mark on the REV and contains no silver.
Presently the silver melt for a War Nickel is .83 with silver being at $14.84 an oz.
Since yours is in average circulated condition plus has sustained some damage, it would not be worth more than melt value to sell.
