I'm just sort of thinking out loud as I type this. i go back and read older ASE posts from time to time. the last time I looked, the (up-to-date at that time) mintage numbers for the burnished ASE appear to be getting lower with each passing year. the sales numbers might also be lowering. is anyone else supposing that the mint might cease making the burnished coin? it's been on my mind. I guess if the mint were to stop making them i'd be sad to see them go, but I wouldn't be crushed by it. there'd probably still be a bullion strike and a proof or two each year, and I guess there's always a chance of a set with a unique ASE included, or a reverse proof or enhanced uncirculated or something. just wondering if any of the community's ASE collectors know anything in particular or have thoughts on it.   |

The only way they're going to stop making them is if they have too to keep up with the bullion demand. The mintages have to fall MUCH MUCH further before they're no longer a cash cow for the mint.

The Mint makes a decent profit on the W's so I agree that it will continue as a series. Bets are off if the design will remain the same though. Here is a somewhat interesting article about the W's. Note: the mintage numbers for the later issues are a tad off. Corrected numbers below the link. ..and an important point regarding "decreasing" numbers. The Annual Dollar Set was d/c'd after 2016 resulting in the lower numbers. It really is a significant decrease over the past 6 years. I wonder if/when they'll take a page from the 2019 annual sets (W cents) and include a bonus item or figure out some other marketing gimmick to boost sales.

I guess it's how you interpret the numbers. I would look at 2014 & 2018 as outliers and the 2017 showing the impact of the d/c'd Dollar set.
We will see how the 2019 does but there were close to 83k sold in the first four days of availability....probably mostly subs.
Keep an eye on that 2018 and see if it holds the "Key" title....

i notice the numbers found in that link are a little different than the numbers that Foxwoods Man posted at the top of the thread, sourced from a coinweek article from a while back, specifically the 2015, 16, 17 and 18. I also noticed that initially the linked article didn't provide a number for 2014, but there's one now & it matches the coinweek article's mintage number. also noticed that the list either doesn't distinguish between the 2017-W & S proofs, but they did for 18 & 19, or it just doesn't list the 17-S proof mintage at all.
so as of now, according to that link, if it's legit, the 2019-W burnished/uncirculated silver eagle mintage is just north of 116K. I'm still looking for an additional source for current numbers.

Myself, like many people I'm sure also, Are pretty sick of the mint cash grab that gets more and more out of hand each year. In general I buy a bullion silver eagle for myself from a dealer, and I only get the proof or burnished coins if they are gifted to me by someone. Sorry, they are just getting stupid with making them, too many, and too expensive when it would take decades for silver to go up to cover the cost the mint is charging alone, if ever. if they were to lower mintages to make them more rare, collectible and valuable beyond their melt value, I could see it, but these things are a cash grab from the completists, it's like star wars action figures and them changing the packaging and releasing them again, knowing the completists collectors will want to buy both versions and spend more money.
I dunno, I'm buying this ERP Silver eagle on Nov. 14th if I can, but I'm kind of burned out on silver eagles in general, proof or burnished. it's just too much in my opinion, cost, and quantity produced, and SAEs to collect each year now, in the end, a shops going to give you melt on them...

Proofs and the burnished don't trade for bullion, never have. They have numismatic value and bullion stackers should just stick to bullion if they're just worried about the spot price. Quote:

I still enjoy collecting this series. I'm not sure how many more than 6 issues a year I can handle though. I guess we'll see what they come up with in 2020... 35th anniversary of the ASE you know...  edit: I guess the 35th will actually be in 2021. But still. Edited by CelticKnot

Any update on 2020 West Point I see on mint site it's listed as back ordered so still being made? Rate on ebay for them is $80 in (OGP/COA) One seller has marked them as rarest regular issue Which would be BS if its still being made to orders MS 70s going for $125 Before the run started rate for a M-S 70 on Presale was in low $80 range I ordered two looking at purchase history someone ordered 37 priced at $84.99 lol that is straight gambling Will it be the rarest I doubt it since everyone can still order and sure some dealer ordered a ton due to the 2020 date with Corona as a resemblance to that year just like that emergency production eagle At this point I would be not surprised if we see mintage on this number surpassed from burnished previous years |

I think it kinda doesn't make sense to buy the 2020 W on ebay (or any private site) when the product definitely will be (it is now) available from the Mint. They have MANY months to mint these and will sell quite a few more. It DOES make sense to SELL them on ebay now since the price will return to normal after production gets going again. |
