Or maybe someone intentionally cracked it out of its Proof set, and intentionally spent it?

Dealers buy "raw" proof sets in hopes of spotting coins that have an honest shot at a 69-70 grade. If the other coins obviously won't make the cut (spots, scuffs, MAD etc) it isn't worth ~$20 for grading. A raw proof coin is barely worth more than face, so why not spend it?

Two thoughts come to mind.
A family member of a deceased collector cracked them out.
A collection was stolen and they were cracked out by the thief.

I grade and value circulated proof coins as I would would for a standard business strike, and just comment 'impaired proof' on the 2x2.

Hard to get! While I was roll hunting I found several clad/silver proof dimes and proof nickel.

A proof in pocket change is always fun to find, no matter the source.

All of the above explanatinos are certainly plausible.

Not to long ago I used to give a proof set and a Red Book to many people for Christmas. Not to long ago I found out that one those people I gave them to needed money and spent all the coins in those proof sets as is just coins. After further checking I found out several others did the same thing so I no longer give coins of any kind to anyone.

That's so sad. Just carl, if you give proof coins to me I promise I won't spend them

I often have doubles or excess proof coins. Sometimes I group a bunch and sell then on ebay. However, sometimes it's just not worth bothering and I deposit them at the bank. By the time you have paid ebay fees, PayPal fees and risked running into a scammer, it's just not worth bothering with. Plus I figure some young kid may end up finding it and we have a new collector!

almost certainly someone cracked it from the set & put it into circulation. 'how' & 'why' obviously debatable, but the reasons listed above are the most likely.

heh... I can admit to having spent a few proof coins into circulation a long time ago, and I also find them in circulation from time to time, most recently was last year or the year before, found a 1971-S proof quarter in my pocket change.

this means, of course, that we need to be watching for all the other proof coins from those respective sets, they just might still be circulating, too!

carry on, eyes open..
