I knew I had one.. but when did I actually get three of these? 1811 - was once covered in some stuff, half of which has flaked off from the reverse and from the obverse details, what is really when you look closely. Also, it's a bit not-centered. 1812 - was and still is covered in shiny stuff which I was told used to be applied to coins to prevent from the green something (what's it's name). I've seen many 18/19 Century coins with this. Here, it's still in the fields which makes them shiny, however none is present on the devices and rims. Looks like this was part of a collection long ago. 1814 - this has unusually sharp details for this type, but its surface is a little porous (round the "1") and previous (not recent) cleaning comes to mind. Should I: a) keep the 1811 b) keep the 1812 c) keep the 1814 d) buy a problem-free coin for heaven's sake Everyone's opinion welcome. With comments if possible. Edited by DL20K 08/31/2008 1:26 pm

A) Keep all coins and start a date set. B)I'd say keep the 1814 and send the rest to me TheKid!

I would c) keep 1814, unless you have more use for another year (I don't suppose you have an "One for each year"-collection like I do but one never knows)
Sharpness in detail is most important to me. The 1814 simply looks better. I am not a great fan of porous coins but if one has to choose between evils I would pick this.

I would, in this order: A. Keep the rarest coin (if there's a difference) B. Keep the best condition coin C. If none are rare, and/or all have some little problem, I might trade/sell all three for a good one. I think it's better to have just one very nice (or very rare) coin than a lot of average ones. But I don't collect by year or series, only rarity.

You've summed it up perfectly - "none are rare and all have some little problem"..
My ancient Krause prices them equally, why my all-Polish reference book says "-" meaning "common" for all three.

Top right is best, keep that one if the others are not much rarer. Otherwise why not collect a date run or sell them all together?

A date run on those would mean a date run on all Poland. Too expensive. I don't feel any need for multiple Polish coins anyway, one good example is enough for me. Why not sell - because I do want ONE for my set. This is the only Polish coin of the Napoleonic period that's within my price range. If I sold all of them I'd have to buy one.. KurtS has a point.. but currently the best one for sale: http://www.allegro.pl/item429357126...814_rok.htmlBut is it really MUCH better?

Keep the 1814. It is not a bad looking coin. The 1812 doesn't look natural and the 1810 looks like it has environmental damage.

And 20 zl for that 1814, but it doesn't seem that much better to me.

I'd keep them all. In fact, there isn't much that I don't keep.

I'd keep them all, too, but if you're a type collector rather than date collector, only keep the best one. I like the look of the 1812 best in the images.
Before you dismiss the 1812 because of it's "shiny stuff" coating, try and see what it looks like under it. This is probably renaissance wax, and is still used by the more traditionalist ancient and mediaeval coin collectors to protect coins prone to Green Death / Bronze disease. Get some acetone or similar such organic solvent and try to dissolve it off; ren wax (and most other kinds of waxes or varnishes) should come off easily enough.
