Hi everyone! I got this in change the other day and have never seen one before. I wanted to know if it was real?

I don't know much about American coins but it looks like a hobo nickel, right? Curious.

Looks like one of the modern "hobo" nickels a number of people make these days. So yes, it's a real 1936-S buff, though it ought to be worth more now. I've never heard of them circulating.

Thanks EBrown! But what's a hobo nickel? I've heard of a wooden nickel but not a hobo nickel.

Thank you Numisma! So it is real? And because it's a hobo nickel makes its value go up?

I wouldn't get your hopes too high. 1936 is a common year for the fake Chinese replica coin modern hobo nickel casts. Here's a 1936-s going for $3.99 on ebay..https://www.ebay.com/itm/HOBO-Nicke...d:1....still cool to find it in circulation....But do some research on the coin. The wear on the back doesn't feel right to me. I'd go with Chinese fake, but I may be wrong. Do some research or wait for others to chime in....and btw Welcome to CCF.

I'd say this is 100% counterfeit and agree with Doc that the reverse isn't quite right.

Chinese fake hobo nickel. Not a real "hobo", not a real nickel.

Ahhhh missed that. You are completely right....well that means selling for $3.99 on ebay for similar, but who's buying? It's worth whatever one pays under that probably , but most indeed a fake.
