Good morning!

I'm new to the forum, and have a coin that has piqued my interest. After as much internet research as I could muster, I'm at a loss as to whether I have "something". Anyway, please see photos. Coin is a matte chocolate brown. Very clear and "clean" details. I haven't cleaned it or anything, but have been handling it. It hasn't changed appearance since I found it - no smudge marks, no dirt or anything. I was told in a Facebook page that its just "normal wear and tear" and more of an incidental color change than anything intentional. I have a hard time believing that because the design is SO crisp and the color completely uniform. Please let me know your thoughts!

I'm of the opinion that "experimental rinse" is just some error dealers trying to make something out of nothing.
There is no way to determine what exactly is the cause, there is no diagnostic to look for to identify one from any other toned Sacagawea dollar, one is just like another or any other dependent on circulation.

It's not hard for "an expert" to claim something is and get a grading company to put it on a slab for them.
Scientist or "experts" say one thing for decades just to find out they were wrong a half century later.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. You would likely have to send it to an expert for review, get their determination on it in writing then send it to get slabbed otherwise it wold just be slabbed as a normal 2000 P SAC dollar.

Just my 2 cents on the experimental rinse. I think it's a gimmick to make something out of nothing to make a buck for coins that toned early for whatever the reason was.
Also I don't think PCGS or NGS or ANACS will attribute them anymore they way they once did. I think they realized their mistake with them also.

I can be wrong though, maybe they will slab them given the right attribution by an expert, Like Fred Weinberg maybe.

to CCF. Looks "striped" not a rinse issue. The rinse issue was on 2001 http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/add002.html

Just worth what it says on the reverse. When the color is gone on these coins, it has passed through just a few hands. It doesn't last long.

To me they should just get away from using dollar bills, put the dollar coins in the space in the till to the left of the quarters, stop the half dollar production and put two dollar bills in the space where the dollar bills used to go. It would save a fortune on printing the dollar bills.

You get better mileage out of the dollar coins, than the dollar bills. Where do the dollar coins got to now. In a drawer at home. Lets use them to same money on making money last longer. Or switch over to $5.00 change cards. You use a plastic card for any change and get rid of all coins. Swipe them on the terminals and be done with change.

I'm a realist. Get rid of stuff that costs more than the coin is worth. Besides, with all the coins we have, we'd corner the market. I guess you'd hate my third choice. Get rid of all money and just use cards. LOL

Your third choice is slowly taking place right now, Coop. My grandkids have no idea what money is - they've never seen their parents use it.

Also a lot of younger ones don't know what half dollars and large dollar coins are. They ask, what country are these from?

First time here. I randomly search this coin now and then to see if anything pops up. I've had an ongoing thread in collectors weekly for 5-7 years on it. Everyone will tell you it's just a $1. Maybe so. Then why does it get rejected by every grader for not able to grade at this time? If you check the CW thread, you will also see a post that refers to a date NGC recognized said coin for 9 days in 2011. I've ran across about 3 other guys that have them. It's an odd coin and no one will look at it and be like wth is this, until they hold it.

These are probably sent off to grading when they need the money? This one is a 5K coin. Why should anyone think they will find it in circulation.
