That is called Die Deterioration. Note on all areas you see this in the direction of the rim. (an image you didn't include is LIBERTY, where you will see the same thing on the left sides of the devices) This is part of the aging process of the die. Check to see if you see the same thing on the reverse? Then you can save this one as an educational piece to show to other new collectors as DDD. (Die-Deterioration-Doubling) Basically die wear for a single squeeze die coin.

Worn die issue. It will start with a "Ridge Rim" and will get worse over time.
