Hey everyone, Found this 50 cents while noodling however I don't know if it's a mint error or PMD. 1) Please comment and let me know your thought 2) How do you tell if it's and error or PMD (is there something to look out for?) 3) If it's an error, what would be the estimated value? Thanks everyone for your opinion

Hi all,
Just noticed this, on the word "Australia" is the bottom font for the "alia" usually like that?
Thanks

It's possibly a bitten rim, but I don't know for sure.
Wait till other more knowledgeable members comment.

Clipped planchet for sure. Notice how the base of the letters ALIA are fishtailed. Great find.

Glad to hear that it was clipped planchet error.
By the way, how rare is this error?
And how do you know if it was man made?
Thanks

you can see the marks on the coin continue all the way around whereas if it was tooled the direction of the marks might change or even become smooth (another thing is the fishtailing of the design something that very hard to fake), not sure on value you might get need to find someone who either knows more or has sold one recently, as the condition like with all coins matters. This one is nice condition uncommon error so hard to find some good references.

Agree that it's real. Not sure about the value though as you don't see many clipped 50c pieces.

Thank you all for sharing your opinion on this coin A little off topic, don't know if I should start a new topic. Does anyone have a list of error's to look out for, also it's rarity? Being a new coin collector, I'm a little lost with the amount of errors and different names/terms. Much appreciated for everyone's guidance

Hey Charl,
I've just checked in my copy of Renniks Australian Pre-Decimal & Decimal Coin Errors. It does contain examples of clipped 50 cent pieces, one of which was a 1982 Commonwealth Games commemorative which sold for $200 - however it was almost uncirculated and had three clips.
But the fishtailing? Wow. That adds another dimension. I wonder what it would fetch if auctioned?
Anyway, I digress. The above title is the one I consult on all things error and a book I recommend to all new collectors (I'm fairly new myself, in that I've been collecting for a few years, but only a few months in an organised fashion).
Nice find.

Hey MNCcoino,
Thanks for the comment and book recommendation.
I just brought the Renniks Australian Coin & banknote values last week.
Will definitely buy a copy of book you recommended in the very near future.
