Big Silver - Just two coins for sale, and both are apparently bogus. I lean toward malice.

Just for reference, here's my fake 1916-D I purchased on Etsy- for educational purposes, of course. Perhaps we can match some features.

Here's the seller's description of the current listing: This coin was purchased from a lot that was involved in a house fire. The only cleaning done to the coin was the removal of soot and burnt plastic but some marks wouldn't come out without a full cleaning so it is still not fully cleaned
Here's the seller's description of the dime he sold for $1,025 . . . This 1916 D Merc. came from a coin collection that was involved in a house fire in 2005. The only cleaning done to this coin was the removal of the melted plastic from its holder and the removal of the soot from the fire. Both the face and reverse of this coin are just absolutely beautiful but unfortunately the edges are worn down. Hopefully the pictures are enough for you to determine the coins grade but if you need any additional photos or have any questions, feel free to reach out. Happy bidding! Sounds like a whole lot of fires going on.

Curiously, the seller has posted photos of the edge and reeding of the current and last 1916-D. Here are his photos. Current listing: Previous listing (sold for $1,025):

Quote: Has also sold a 1909 S VDB which I am almost certain is not genuine. I screenshot the VDB. Doesn't look right to me. It is a fake. Positioning of the period after D is wrong.

How many red flags are needed? Seller has very little feedback as a seller Seller mysteriously has multiples of key dates (and nothing else) Seller has a heartstring story for each coin (rescued from a fire) Design similarities to known fakes Edge and reeding are wrong No deposit, no sad songs, and no returns All key date coins are raw Coins have "cleaning" (which coincidentally obscures surface pitting on cast counterfeits) Seller implies that professionals have authenticated the coin (remember the poor melted slabs?) Photos are too small to enlarge clearly, are at odd angles, or are unclear Price is too good to be true Possible shill bidding

Amazing to know that there are now more 1916D dimes out there than were ever minted. I bought one at a flea market for $5 once and it really looked real. By now the total mintage is well into the many millions. Eventually there will be more of those than even the 64 Jefferson nickel.
