I came across this very strange penny. From both sides it looks like a top layer was torn off.
The weight is 2.5 grams so none of the metal (copper, etc) seems that is missing.

I've never seen an error like this before.

I can't make out the year or mint.

Is this something of potential value?

Thanks

Heres some more pics. I was thinking about some of the comments that it could be something from a commercial dryer, It tumbled many many times causing it to balloon up, then it popped on both sides causing the torn effect. torn means that some part of it was removed. So how can it still weigh the correct amount of a penny?

the edges dont look like it was fabricated, but hey thats why I'm here. Most have probably seen almost everything and anything.

Woah, doesn't look like glue. Doesn't look like PSD. It's either altered or legit....yea, I'm waiting for the experts too.

EDIT: could you post more photos and in different angles and lighting? I'm wondering...how big is it? Do you have a scale?

to CCF. First thought is a major " Dryer Coin". I doubt it is a mint error.PMD of some kind.

@CAA, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is not the typical coin that we see posted here. Can you please add a pic of the edge of this coin to this thread? Thx.

Without a doubt it's a commercial Dryer Coin. It stayed in a lot longer than most

I agree. It probably spent a long time in the commercial dryer.
