Would like your Grading Consideration on this half. Most of the lines in the fields that look like cleaning lines are raised, such as the ones between her eyelevel and the stars opposite, and on the back back between the eagle and motto. Thanks Jim

WOW, a great looking half. I'd say AU-50 easy. The variety appears to be an O-114 with the obverse; (1)825 leaning sharply to the right and looks a little higher. The E in the banner appears to be situated under the right side of the D in United. I may be wrong as I'm only comparing it to the examples here. http://coinzip.proboards79.com/inde...board=lebustTake Care Ben

I agree...what a gorgeous capped bust half...worthy of any collection! Grade EF-45 (due to the wear on eagle talons)...otherwise AU details!

Thanks, I had more or less determined from lurking on the bust half forum that it was an O-114 but I am happy for some confirmation. When I bought it, it was described as EF, but the obverse was better than my slabbed EFs. Thanks to both of you.

I agree with EF-45, but mostly because of the wing and eagle head. Obverse could go AU.

Maybe this is what I have read about being a "slider" where the coin was in a drawer and or something and was slid on its reverse causing the wear.

XF45
chrsb: Slider means AU58 and with the same implications you noted.

Thanks to all! The strange thing is I like the EF grade better than the AU, as if everyone said AU, I would probably slab it and sell it Since I bought it as EF, I can keep it and enjoy it for what it is! But, for the Bust Half crowd, If you could only have one reference book on Bust Halves, what would it be ? Thanks, Jim

One reference source? Hmm, since I only have one, I'll go with Overton's Book. Take Care Ben

Hi Ben, Thanks, I suspected that would be one . Which edition do you have? I have been wondering how much difference there was between the earlier editions and the latest ( 1990? I think). Are you in anthropology or archeology? Jim

I have the 1st, 2nd and 4th editions of Al Overton's work. Unfortunately, I haven't picked up a 3rd edition. The books I have are adequate for the work I do and so far I've learned a great deal over the past 7-8 years when it comes to Bust Half Dollars. Archaeology, yes indeed I love it. I was fortunate enough to help with two digs when I was stationed in Germany, one (neolithic) near Trippstadt, and the other (early Iron age) near Trier. The US Air/Army bases were extending a couple roads and found evidence of habitation. Since LOL, I'd taken a couple of undergraduate classes in Anthropology & Paleoanthropology (SFASU 82) I was selected to help with recovery of the artifacts and help survey the areas. Now, I'm into the oligocene fossils of the White River Badlands in SD and NE. Take Care Ben
