The top of the D is reduced by Machine Doubling. The bottom looks like a strike mark.

Note the affected area on the top, reduced the mintmark shape on the upper part of that area.

coop, I noticed that "contact mark" jumps over the south leaning branches and carry over to the adjacent west east branch stem...I don't think an alteration would do that?
