Machine doubling. Not a doubled die. The difference? A doubled die is created on the die with a wrong alignment/or damaged hub. Machine Doubling is from a normal die that after the strike, it is damaged by the machine.

coop...ty...so the way the L,F,D,O looks chipped away was most likely done when the coin was struck?

Hey guys, I think we are missing the point of the OP. Yes, its definitely Machine Doubling...but its weird. Specifically zoom in on the the last pic at how the devices themselves have a weird "scalloped" edge right above the step formed by the Machine Doubling. What causes this? If it was on just one letter I would think it a hit, but what caused this type of PMD besides the MD?

Any ideas on what caused those scalloped edges on L,F,D,O?

@baldee I PM'd a couple of the guys who were here already to see if they could chime in again. I tried to PM you to let you know but your email settings don;t allow PMs.

Earle42, maybe the machine was very loose and moved around like when you scribble with a crayon? I don't really know.

Almost looks like the metal chipped away from the Machine Doubling pushing hard against these devices.

Thanks for coming back to this both of you. I just have never seen this on MD before and was really interested what it could be.
@Coop That much pressure on such a thin metal edge and pushing at an angle makes a lot of sense it could chip.

Keep in mind how the metal gets pushed aside because of the MD. So it probably later comes off during circulation. But the coin is still a keeper. 40% silver.
