What you are seeing is the result of a well used die pair nearing retirement. It's called Die Deterioration or DD. There may be a die crack on the reverse, also a indicator of an aging die

Not so fast it is still a 1939-S Wheat cent and carry's a premium above face value, so don't spend it, hold onto it.

The are to the right of the date might be grease. A toothpick will move it if it is grease.
