Well, its been done with nickels on this forum, so why not with pennies? I've made some predictions about what I will find in 1,000,000 pennies below.

Predictions:
40's and 50's wheat pennies: 4500
30's: 1000
10's and 20's: 500
Indian Head cents: 5 to 10 (I know this sounds like a lot, but if I find 5 thats finding one every 80 boxes so...
Flying Eagle cents: Probably a 1 in a million chance, but I think its possible.

Let me know what you guys think!!

Forgot to include the specifications of what I will be taking out of circulation.
I will be taking anything out of circulation that is not a Lincoln Cent minted between 1959 and present day. This means that in addiition to wheat cents, Indian Head cents, etc, I will also pull any foreign coins I find.

I just went through my first $15 (not very much, I know, but its a start

John1, thanks for the welcome!! If you have never found a Flying Eagle cent, but you have searched through 5 million pennies, my luck probably won't be any better! What are some cool thing that you have found? There's gotta be some incredible stuff in 5 million pennies!

Don't forget to search for errors and varieties too! Don't leave those out, as there's plenty of them you need to look for.

What you'll find will depend a lot on how your supply was assembled. Modern coin sorting machines will reject early Indian heads & Flying Eagles. One thing you might turn up more of than you expect is the Panama un centesimo which has been struck on U.S. cent specification planchets.

Thanks for all the support for this adventure! I just finished going through $35 worth of pennies. About 10 rolls were bank wrapped and the rest were customer wrapped. Some of the customer wrapped were short some, but I also found a total of 8, yes 8, Roosevelt dimes, which will fully cover any losses I may have taken with the short customer wrapped rolls.
Some other highlights included a 1940 Canadian cent, a 1913 Wheat penny, and 2 1929 wheat cents. Below are the totals.

So far: 5,000 pennies searched through
To go: 995,000

Finds ( United States coinage)
40's and 50's pennies: 23
30's pennies: 3
20's pennies: 2
10's pennies: 1

Finds (Foreign coins)
Canadian 1 cent: 20
Bermuda 1 cent: 1

Dimes (new category)
Roosevelt: 8

Also, to all of those encouraging me to look through varieties, I don't think I will be able to. Though it is the summer and I have lots of time, during the school year (Im in college) I won't have enough time to go over all the varieties. Anyway, I'm going to the bank to return the coins I just looked through, so I should have another post later tonight!

FYI: It is not good practice to return to the same bank you get them unless you pre oked it with them. Besides, you may get your own returns. Also, you should keep the 40's and 50's separate in your tallies.

Best of luck with your search. You may want to read up on the really valuable double dies and other valuable varieties.

Hi John1, I understand your concern about returning to the same bank I got them from, but don't worry, I'm not doing that! I miss worded my response above. Currently my system is to pick up coins from one large branch of Bank of America and drop them off at a local bank that has a coin counter so I don't have to re-roll them. On another note, I will start separating my 40's and 50's totals. Thanks for the support once again!!

I picked up the another $35 in pennies (I know its a strange amount, but its all the cash I have on hand right now, as I keep forgetting to withdraw more from the bank). Except for about $5-$10, these were all machine wrapped, and, in the beginning of the hunt, did not look too good. But, at the end, I began to find wheats galore and on the 3rd to last roll I found my first Indian Head cent for this project! I've only found 3 others, and of those 3 only one was from the 19th century. Even though its quite worn, its still a good find.
