I found this in a mixed circulated roll, from a bank box of U.S. Pennies today. Is this a Struck Through error or just a scratch? I need to know just in case if it's something, before it gets tossed back into the pile. The box I've been going though has been pretty much a dud. So far, I've only found one Wheat cent, over a dozen Canadian Cents, and nothing really else too exciting etheir. Atrocious.

Struck through! No pushed up metal, and it ends sharply. Nice find!

Thank you for the feedback examiner and CoinHunter27! I am glad that this is a legitimate Struck Through error. It will probably be pretty much the highlight of the box I've been searching through.

I'm leaning towards a "struck through" also...If it was a scratch,I believe some zinc would be showing somewhere within...

Thank you Greasy Fingers for your input! I'd say it's Struck Through as well.

What's the Cliff Notes summary of how a struck-through error originates and has it historically generated significant interest as a collectible?

IMO it has to be struck thru. Besides what everyone's already said about the shaping, what convinces me the most is the '9' of the date. It shows genuine weakness on the outside of the digit. In addition, note how the missing chunk of the '9' is shaped to the strike through, a scratch couldn't replicate that as it would deviate when it hit a raised element.

E&V, I'm going to play devils advocate here and suggest this may have come after the strike. Your 4th pic down showes a highlight on the side of the anomaly that the lighting came from and on the other side of the anomaly there is a shadow. This says pressure ridge to me.
The anomaly forms a strait line as it heads south to the 9 then follows the curve of the 9 till it heads south again on a parallel but different line to the northern part. The 9 in the die would not have had this effect on a strike through as the field part of the die would have already trapped a piece of foriegn matter

E&V, this area interests me on the reverse. It would appear to be almost directly opposite the anomaly on the obverse.

Here are my two questions:
Since the date is recessed on the die, what would cause the wire (or other object) to conform to the curve of the "9"?
If the area on the reverse is also recessed, could this be post-strike, but in-mint, caused by crimping or gripping the mint bag during the sewing process?

I am hoping Coop will come along, so he can clear things up. I did contact him, but I'll have to wait.

It certainly looks like a strike through. Great find.
