A couple of months ago I was amazed to find this coin in my pocket change from a transaction earlier that day. occaisionally I receive Wheats in my change but generally much newer coins from the 40's and 50's once in awhile from the 30's but never from the teens or even 20's. Needless to say 5-05-2019 I removed it from circulation because as you can see this cent was way past due for a rest. In looking at this coin one can begin imagine how painstaking the process of making dies to strike a coin must have been. Apparently they were very reluctant when you notice all of the errors due to die wear. Just thought I'd share this 102 year old beauty with ya'll that's all.

to CCF.Very nice find. Couple of nice die cracks on the reverse. Die crack under the bust. Under LIBERTY and the date looks kinda like trails,I checked the trail die site but no mention of one for that year. Looks to be worth around $2 for the date, but if it is a trail die that should increase the value. John1

yes, great find! wasn't familiar with the term 'trail date'... is this related to what appears to be the almost drip mark streaks under the lettering? thanks! I've got a new penny around here somewhere that has it...hmmm.

First, Interesting coin, and a great find! There are four known Retained Cuds (now called "pre-cuds"} on 1917-S cents. The die break on the left wheat stalk of your coin is close to one of them, but does not match at the point where the die break crosses "E" of EPU. Your coin has die breaks, but not yet at the stage of Retained Cuds. It's a definite keeper.

Nice pre-VDB cent before it was added under the shoulder the next year.

The lines in the center of the head are called coin scratches. These are often done when people clean them too harshly. Still a hole filler for a book though.

Looks like that area is damage. When you look at an overlay, you can see the reverse is showing a raised area in that location:
