I've been to a couple of dealers, but am at their mercy since I don't have any background when it comes to coins. How can I figure out who to trust? And since it's "one of a kind" how can I estimate a value? Edited by makuta 08/05/2019 5:58 pm

to ccf! That's an amazing error coin! I've never seen something like that to price it. For selling, you could contact Ian with greatcollections (a coin auction house). It's one of the largest coin auction houses and has very good, or no, sellers fees.

Agree, never seen anything like it. I would start by contacting Heritage Auctions and be prepared to send FULL SIZE photos of BOTH sides of your slab RIGHT-SIDE UP for their appraisal. to the CCF!

Perhaps the previous owner would have some idea of its value.

Heritage first, Great Collections second.
That is an early major error and should sell for four figures, at least, depending on the buyers watching.

If that coin had a date the price would shoot up exponentially. Most error collectors want a date, not a date-range.

That is an amazing coin. Very rare error I'm sure, especially on an older coin from the 1800s. Definitely worth a premium to me. I would suggest Heritage Auctions, as already stated.

Thank you all for your help. I will follow the advice I received. The coin was found with a bunch of others, left by a long-deceased relative (we don't know which), so we have no history, and not interest in keeping it.

From what I can tell it could be an 1874 S Half Dollar and the die marriage looks to be WB-101, WB-1. I looked at all of the mint mark placements from 1866 to 1878 and this is the only reverse die that comes the closest. I am not sure how they came up with 1871-75?

You could try ebay or one of the many auction houses for coins on the internet.

I have some contacts that deal in errors like this if you want to contact me, click on my user name westcoin and send me an message. Do not accept anything under $5K for this and it is possibly worth much more. Be wary of snakes trying to get this cheap! I also have some interested dealer friends that are market makers in the early error coin field. Just don't sell it to the first offer. Rough hand guess is minimum value of at least $5K and possibly a lot more. This is a major error in a series that doesn't see a lot of errors of his magnitude.
