I don't even know if this is a "thing" like the no FG's on a Kennedy half but it's the first one I've seen. Are you around coop?

Probably the same cause of all other missing devices. Over polishing of the dies. They were there, until the mint worker removed them. They figured no one will miss this. But they are so wrong.

So you have seen this on other quarters coop? I figured it could be due to over-polishing just like the no FG Kennedy's. I don't know how common this is on quarters or if it makes for a better premium?

Professor coop - is there a way to distinguish an over-polished die from a grease-filled die in this situation, other than the complete absence of an image?

@Coinfrog, I think coop came to that conclusion from other missing devices & details from the over-polishing

Over polishing, reduces the size/removes the devices. Grease will will make them show wider or disappear by them filling in. So I decided to look over images of these Washington quarters. While few showed the initials on the pre-1942 quarters, I noticed that on the 1943 examples they all showed better. No mention of this anywhere else, but the may have made a new master hub that year. The initials were stronger on all the 1943-D quarters. So this maybe not an issue of polishing at all, be cause they were weaker then. So missing initials were often not found on the business strike and proof quarters on the pre-1942 coinage.

I sent this message on to James Wiles, and here is his response: Quote:Richard: Thanks for the info. I just completed a relook at the Washington quarter designs. You are correct. 1943 had a new master hub design. The new information is now available on varietyvista. Thanks, James Wiles

Coop-will you go over to the older coin error page and look at my Mercury dime with doubled eyes?
