If it's fake, that edge hit on the cheek below the ear is a nice touch...

On second review, looking at the date and other details more carefully, I think mox is probably right.

China "minters" toss coins into a large rock tumbler then leave a coating of grease on the surface for a week, then wipe it "almost clean".

Damage or apparent circulation is never a guarantee of authenticity.

It is also a long arrow nock, so it's easy to narrow the VAM down to a few coins and compare. It appears the coin was polished so it is making the details pretty hard to see. I don't have a good feeling about it either, but the softness and blurriness of details could come down to the polish. A lot of other parts do match up. I'd like to see better photos of the coin in question, less glare, close ups of the arrow nock area, date and the eye especially.

It could be a good one, this is a tough call.

Ah I see it's also been posted to the VAM Forum, so I'll take it over there.

Would you be willing to post an edge-on photo, to show the reeding? Many of the Chinese counterfeits use a Castaing machine (or equivalent) to reed the coins after striking them.

The date looks wrong, and that's another area where the Chinese counterfeits are really lacking.

Weight and specific gravity would help. The Chinese are currently using a Sn-Zn core that can emulate specific gravity fairly well. Those fakes can't pass the ping test or Eddy Current slide (Lenz's law) test, though.

Thanks for the edge photo! The reeding looks correct. That means the issue with the date is just PMD. It's a genuine coin, but has been tortured and cleaned. It's somewhere in the VF details realm, probably VF-25-ish details.

As a VAM-57 Long Nock - I'd say it's worth a tad more than melt, probably at least $50.00 and up to $90.00 it's one of the more common long nocks, but still a tough coin to find.
