This replica of a rare 1675 Louis XIV ecu for Bearn on ebay.com caught my eye as a "first-glance fake"

Coin Thaler 1675 France, Sun king Louis XIV God-Given

This seller has a number of unmarked/undisclosed replicas on ebay. Maybe they are just too obvious to fool anyone?

An authentic 1675 Ecu for Bearn from a cgb.fr auction (for comparison):

The coin in the first photo looks so good it could have been made last week! Maybe it was?

Not sure whose fakes are worse, the Russians or the Chinese.

In at least one case I am aware of, the ebay seller was registered in Russia but the "coins" were drop-shipped from China.

I noticed a second seller of similar fakes that may come from the same source as above. Many of them are well executed; however this rendition of Louis XIV is rather comical.

The replica artist most likely used the cgb coin as his model. True to the original, he included a gash (near BD) in the obverse portrait.

Looks like these have been taken down.

There are dozens of fake Poland "thalers" listed at $30 to $50 by sellers in the Russian federation, equally obvious.

Our friend from the Russian Federation seems to have yet another user ID.

All the fakes for sale are "Acquired from the hands of the population. Not new."

There are a wide range of countries and types, both rare and not so rare. Worth studying to protect yourself.
