A few of you have seen this coin before...I didn't find it unfortunately but I know where the park is, it was found in.

It still has dirty around the devices, which are mostly noticable on the reverse. It has some nice bulleye yellowish center to blues on the outside toning on the obverse.

It's about as good as I can get it from soaking and I am afraid to do much more to it than that. Therefore, I am thinking about sending it to NCS. Thoughts if it would be worth it and grade?

XF45

That's a great ground find. I don't see anything indicating it was in the ground which is quite surprising.

XF45 or AU50 details. Nice! Makes me want to take up metal detecting.

I can't imagine that thing's been sitting in the ground for over a hundred years. Nelrak, did you get any pics of it when it was still fresh from the ground?
Of course, I don't know what the soil is like where you are. If that was laying around in southeast Texas it would be almost be impossible to tell if was a coin!

I'd say AU-50 detail but the dirt around the detail might drop it a bit.

Hi Ken,

I think it has solid AU detail. The reverse surfaces have a slight granular look which might just be the residual dirt. The obverse looks remarkably clean (in the good sense!). The color is pretty darn attractive.

I would be tempted to find out whether NCS could "conserve" this coin to the point that NGC would slab it. There certainly doesn't appear to be any serious damage. As is, it should merit an "AU details, environmental damage" NCS grade.

Of course, I don't know what the soil is like where you are.

Well this was supposedly found in the early 80s by a fellow that metal detected all the time and still does. Our soil here in KY is like potting soil to dark brown dirt to reddish clay.

Who knows...maybe he buried it in his backyard for years. He "found it metal detecting"...that's his story and he's sticking to it. I liked it enough that I bought it about a year ago. Needless to say it also caused me to go buy a metal detector but so far I have a nice collection of newer coins.

It was in his old type set album that he had on consignment and was going to sell and the "consigner" gave me first dibs at the coins in it, so I got this coin and a 1840 H10.

I guess I could hit up the NGC site and send them the photos and see if they could do anything with it, good suggestion. All I know is that I don't want to dig at the dirt on it.
