Hello Coin Community!

I ran across this 1971 D Jefferson nickel and noticed something odd about the obverse next to Liberty and the Date.

Can anyone help identify what this is?

Thanks a bunch!

Just glue/residue. It's PSD.

How does the glue actually cut a groove in the coin?
Look at the "LIB" in Liberty and how the groove goes under the letters.

Is the area in question raised or recessed?

If you have any Acetone or nail polish soak the coin for an hour , then back to us with the results..
Sidebar: yes I know.. nail polish...but guys we're not talking about a high dollar coin..

This quits out of my league since I haven't seen this before. EV I don't think it's glue. Looks interesting

Try acetone soak and see if it changes.

Good luck!

Cheers

What appears to be the glue running under the letters is where:

1. The glue coated the entire letters at one time - both the cavities (lower areas of design - like the holes in the letter B) and the members making up the letters themselves (higher areas of design - actual parts of the letters that form them).

2. As would be expected, the members of the letters, being higher areas, had the glue wear off of them through normal circulation, whereas the glue inside the cavities remained b/c it was protected from wearing off.

Thus you have the illusion of the glue passing under the letters.

There is nothing in the minting process that could have made your coin look like this.

Acetone will likely remove the glue residue completely.
