@filmstar, first welcome to CCF adn glad that you have been bitten by the collecting bug. Can you please include an overall shot of the front and back of this coin too? That might help to determine what you have there.

Agree. Need sharp full pics of both sides of each coin, with close-ups and your thoughts on areas you find of interest. to the CCF!

Yes, the photos you have at the moment all look like one image superimposed on top of another. It's very difficult to make out what you have.

It looks to me as though it might have had another coin glued onto it at some point. The inverted '1/2' may be the indent of the other coin in the residue of the glue. You could try cleaning it in acetone to see if it comes off.

Quote: do you think my granddad was trying to make a double headed coin ? Possibly, but these coins were often abused by kids because of their very low face value. I remember a friend of mine putting one in nitric acid once during a school science class while the teacher wasn't looking! (The coin came out noticeably cleaner and thinner).

Hi,
I soaked the coin in acetone 2 or 3 times and nothing has lifted off ? looking at the coin again next to a nother half pence I have noticed that the correct facing 1/2 p numbers dont actually appear to be in line with the crown & P of the word penny anyway so there must be an die error with this coin unless it was the one your mate dropped in acid after all these years ?

I agree. It looks like glue. It maybe removed with acetone. (Natural/pure not the nail polish version)

It could also be the product of a so-called vise job, where this coin was squished in a machinist's vice with another coin and this compression left imprints of some of the features of the other coin.
