Hello all. I am a jeweler by trade and know nothing about coins beyond the metal value. Sometimes I get a coin in on an estate purchase that is not in the books. Below is one such coin. Can you tell me if it is real or fake? If real, any guess as to value would be great.

First of all Welcome to CCF! Unfortunately, this one is definitely out my league. I'm leaning towards post strike damage but I could be a legit mint error, I am not sure. Best of luck

to CCF. Looks like PMD to me also. Is your CCF name in reference to the series MASH?

To CCF! It almost looks like a genuine Double Struck coin that got heavily damaged over the years. I also think you have a Lamination error on the reverse as well. I would like to see what the other members think though.

Thanks for the kind welcome all.

MASH junkie here. Busted.

Unfortunately, I will only be able to bring questions to the table, not answers. I have never sold a coin save for gold bullion coins. I have almost two five gallon buckets full I am saving for when I retire. I figure it will give me something to do with my spare time.

This one just had me curious. I couldn't figure out what I was looking at.

Would be interesting to get a weight on the coin. Assume it's not a '43 steel cent?

No offense, but do you guys seriously have considerations that its a double struck coin? It was obviously hit with some sort of hammer over and over again. You can even see the lines and what looks like letters of a logo around it.

An obvious hammered-out fabrication.

Is that not a struck through nail? Looks like it's poking through on the obverse

All kidding aside, the reverse shows what was a nice lamination flaw running north/south. That's a real error. Unfortunately, it was severely, and intentionally, damaged post-mint. It looks like a large punch or machined metal rod was used in combination with a hammer to make those impressions on the obverse. The concentric lines there look like lathe lines.

Unfortunately, it has zero value. I don't know if you can even safely spend it as a cent.

I figure those concentric rings are from the machined hammer head itself.
At any rate, it was a nice lamination before that.

It does have value,as a learning tool and the copper value. I think it is still against the law to melt it though

Why can I see letters of the EPU on the reverse side, where it looks supposely "Double Struck"? CherryPicker1, not trying to be stupid here, but I honestly just want to learn, so take it easy please.
