Is it anything other than zinc rot?

So,1983 and above are cents made from a zinc core which is copper plated. What you have is a coin that when struck the plating broken,therefore allowing air to react with the zinc and rot to begin...very very common, spend it and forget it

It seems to be very common around the mintmark, which is due to stress during striking on the thin layer of copper. The layer tends to break more the closer to the rim the device is.

Copper plated zinc started with (some) 1982 and newer.
