Hello, new collector here. I don't know whats going on with this penny I found in my piggy bank. Any advice appreciated.

No, it's not an error. It's damaged. The damage happened after it left the mint. It's called PMD.

i figured that much because the shiny copper color under the cut. I just thought it was strange because how rim doubled toward the bottom. Seems like someone took the world's smallest can opener and ripped the edge.

It looks as if it got jammed in something mechanical. But honestly, I think the only thing that accepts a cent anymore,
are Coinstars, counting/wrapping machines & self check-out @ the supermarket.

Coin counter machine also. Looks like this happened shortly after the coin was struck as the color of the affected area and the normal area are the same color. But still worth copper melt. There is is an invisible line where the damage on the edges and across the coin looks like it was jammed into a machine at one time.
