According to Rob Turner the 1891 SDSL Obverse 2 cent is the rarest of the six varieties. He told me that he estimates they only struck 33,000 with this combination of dies. I got mine in the mail today. I had to go through ten years of Heritage sales to find one that they had sold. Plenty of other 1891's but only one like this. I was concerned that it might not be what was pictured in the auction catalog since PCGS had it mis-labeled LDLL. But as you can see, it is the tough one. If you have not checked Turner's site on Vicky cents, you should: https://www.victoriancent.com/ Edited by John K 09/03/2019 1:27 pm

Another reason to buy the coin and not the slab:

Nice coin in that grade, but they really aren't rare, but in that grade, most certainly.... congrats! The SD/SL are somewhat scarce and harder to find above 40. I have 7 ... 2-40's 2-30's, a 20, a 15 and a VG.
The toughest to find (and let Rob know if you find one) is the Obv 3 SD/LL with the large serif T in Gratia and the T in Vicky R/P'd. I have 5 of the SD/SL with that T, but never seen the SD/LL with the T's.
CLARIFICATION: What I put above about a large serif Obv3 SD/LL 1891 was somewhat tongue-in-cheek. As Rob put in "Dies and Diadems", he has "0%" minted for that variety on the "large serif T" Obv page. That's why I said that, if you ever find one, to let Rob know!

With Obverse 2, they are tough. For the last ten years, not one has changed hands on Heritage Auctions. Several with obverse 3 (a) during that same time period.

gidjit - that looks like a regular Obverse 3a to me. Big serif in the "E"s but a normal "T"

Gidgit and John K .. Yes, that is the large serif T in your first enlargement and, as I said, I have a few of them .. all Obv 2's. A "normal" T has serifs much shorter.
John K ... The large crossbars on the E's are the surest marker for an Obv 3 .. they all have it, except for the 1890's, the 1st year for the Obv 3's. If you see a large crossbar E, it's an Obv 3.
Gidgit .. when are you coming to one of our Hamilton Coin Club meetings (next Monday. B

Rob put the "0%" in the book because he's almost certain that there were no SD/LL Obv3's minted with the large serif T. Sorry if I confused some of you. B

I think I may have caused the confusion. Dies and Diadems shows 0% for the obverse 3 die with the PEI "T" paired with a SDLL reverse. That does not mean I found one after the random sample. I have never found one and I am pretty certain there are none.

I think I see what you are talking about now. I'll have to check the other 91's I have to see if I got lucky.
