With the run-up in bullion prices, I've noticed that a lot of semi-rare silver and gold coins have started showing up on ebay. I chased one of these listings over to APMEX, where it was discounted 6% for cash. What surprised me was the huge number of high quality US and ancient coins that are available there. I was used to seeing a motley assortment of bullion-grade polished coins but not any more. "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." Fred Astaire

APMEX concentrates on modern and bullion but I've "stolen" a few nice numismatic coins over the years.

They do both. Pretty sure they also have deals with other dealers where they list their inventory on their site as well

I agree, APMEX does have some great bargains if one looks. I believe it's because they "move" so much material. I cherried a fine buy from them, a variety that they, as "numismatists" dealing in rare coins, should've recognized, listed and priced accordingly. Fortunately for me, it wasn't! My impression is that APMEX is more geared to selling coins as commodities.

I noticed on their ebay listings worn GB pennies for $11, which are worth 10-15 cents. I am not very impressed.

Magnificent examples, Barry. That DB $ makes me envious.

i get some pretty decent stuff from APMEX. I acquired a random date 2-1/2 dollar liberty head gold in AU that has clashing on it, which stunned & delighted me. they have some good deals. I do a lot of window shopping there.

Very nice 1799 barryg. APMEX doesn't deal in the typical ebay "details" slabs. And if you follow their ebay listing over to their site, they discount for cash.

Way back when I was working on completing my 7070 album, I actually purchased all the coins for the gold page from APMEX in one fell swoop. Sadly, it was when gold was around $1800/ounce. At the time, I was convinced that gold was just going to keep getting higher and I didn't want to wait any longer and risk it becoming too expensive. Oops.

Quote: I can't say I've gotten any great bargains, but the prices were at least reasonable and I've been very happy with my purchases.
Here are a few examples: Well done.

Always check the website if you can determine the seller. Usually, they'll sell it for around 10% cheaper since they don't have ebay's fees. If you know & trust the seller, call them, offer another 10% less for a check it the mail (vs. credit card) (or cash at the coin show) and see if they bite. If they counter at just 5% less (AND YOU TRUST THEM)...
