Found an ad in the newspaper yesterday and went to check it out.
He was buying old ladies jewelrey and old coins.
I was sitting in the room watching him value there coins waiting
my turn to show him my coins. From what I've learned in this forum
since I joined I almost felt bad for the older ladies getting ripped
off on there coins. But I stayed to just see what he would say about my coins (my large cents). Well it gets to be my turn and I hand him my book he opens it and looks. I also hand him the book of Lincoln cents, he looks threw it for about 5 seconds. He then turns to me and says "I typically don't sell to people your age" (I'm 18).
I ask him why. He says "Well kids your age just I dont know and cant
be sure they are yours". I didn't want to make a big deal so I kindly said ok thank you and walked out.
I was pretty angry with the guy accusing me of stealing. Even if I did steal them he asks for your drivers liscense, sign your name saying they are yours to sell, AND give you him finger print.
But since I am young I stole the coins and he couldn't trust me lol.

Hmm...well, you're better off I think.
What he said sounds a bit like an excuse. If he was actually ripping other people off, perhaps he didn't want to do that to you--or he simply could not determine a value for your coins that would profit him? Many people are not direct about their motivations. I find getting straight talk from a coin dealer is especially difficult...I no longer expect that, lol.
Rest in Peace

The dealer was clearly out of line in mentioning your age. However, "Ripping off" is a bit subjective and strong, don't you think? No dealer is going to buy coins for over their value just to give a little old lady a good deal. Did he have a posted policy for purchasing coins? Did he seem to be consistent in his treatment? Did he suggest that they sell their coins to private collectors (fat chance of that)? You were right to walk, though.

His point may sound quite rude but he has a valid point as well. When you are selling goods, you always need to provide some kind of ID so that when something goes missing, the police and the unfortunate victims get their job done much easier. It's unfortunate but that's society these days. I'm sure some dealers here can say that if they did not care much about thefts but end up buying stolen goods, they can end up responsible.

I'm fine with the ways he ways buying using Id and a signature. I was just not happy with how he treated me cause of my age ha. He had in the ad of the newspaper buying coins and jewely etc. I don't think the reason he told me that was because he couldn't profit from them because some of the items the people brought in he would tell them he has no place to profit from them in his store.
The older ladies brought in 1860-1890 silver dollars and he was buying them from them for silver value thats one of the things I saw and didnt like. There were not in bad condition at all, I couldn't see them completely but I saw enough to know they weren't just worth silver value. He acted like they were nothing just looked threw them counted how many there were and offered a price. I saw a couple ladies that told him no on a couple things but the others had no idea. Probably from husbands that past away and didnt know what to do with them.
I dont know I just didn't like the way he was treating them and I like the statement of "Ripping them off" lol sorry.

Are you positive that there were pre-1878 Trade and Seated dollars or were they just Morgans? That would be a ripoff for Trade and Seated dollars regardless of condition. However, many dealers will only pay a slight premium over silver value for common date Morgans in average VG-EF/AU condition.

Being young has it's disavantages when it comes to lots of things.
And every once in while adults are shocked that a kid can know or do so much.
Every time someone brings up the things about younger people, I remember a time at a gun range where a little kid of about 10 or so was with a really elderly lady. It was an indoor range so it was difficult to tell who is shooting what. When they came out of the booths, the kid was holding a .45 cal 1911A1 simi auto and the lady he was with had a Ruger .22 I asked who was shooting what, being a little nosey. The little kid said he was teahing his grandmother how to shoot guns as he field stripped the .45 right there.
An old saying is you can't tell a book by it's cover.
People in coin stores and coin shows really should know that.

That is the one thing that bothers me about dealers and sellers. They never take you seriously if you are a younger person. A little while back, I was 12 at the time, I was at a motorcycle shop. I was shopping for a new dirtbike. I had that cash in hand and was ready to purchase on the spot. I went to go talk to the owner and all he did was laugh and say that there wasn't any way for a kid my age to afford something that costs that much. I politely said, "ok" and left. I came back about an hour later and told him that I wanted to show him something. I went out to the truck and just told him, maybe you should take people seriously once in a while as I drove away with my brand new 450f!

He sounds overly cautious. In todays world, can't really blame him. I would have asked for your ID, fingerprint, and signature. If you could not provide that, you'd be done. 18 years old would not have been an issue. Now, if he looked at your coins like they were nothing special, fine. Just collect your coins and belongings and leave. You are the winner, not him. You know what you have!

Haha I like the story on the dirtbikes. But the lady that was giving him the silver dollars told him as he was handing them to him some of the dates. I know for sure 2 of them were in the 1860's the rest she said were imbatween then and 1890. I would understand the guy if I didn't present myself good or act polite. But I was talking to all the older people in the room, I was clean cut and dressed nice lol only thing he could of got of me being a bad kid was having a backwards hat on. Only reason I say that was cause I was changing my phone plan and was with my grandmother and she asked if I'm "trying to make a statement" cause of my hat lol. Some of the older ladies weren't happy with his decision either so I dont know. I went to my girlfriends right after and her dad offered to take them in for me if it was worth it and I didn't want to didn't want him to have the coins if he doesn't trust they are mine. Doesn't deserve my lovely large cents hahaha.

Great topic Teuk,(and great story cabomhn)

I get extremely angry when "grown ups" talk down to teenagers, and I agree that they don't take us as seriously and just "shooo" us away because we are being a nuisance* or something of the sort.(I'm 17 I'll be 18 in a month).

In my opinion, when you are 18 you are a young man, the government thinks you old enough to go to war and fight, and I think we should get treated with a little more respect and not talked down to.I know plenty of 17-18 year olds who are more mature then 20 some year olds.

I refuse to go back to go to a coin dealer near me because he did not take me seriously even though he is the closest. I go an extra ten miles because the people at the other store treat me with more respect.

If I were you Teuk I would just not go back to him and if any of your friends are interested in going to him just tell them that story.

Sorry, but this topic gets me fired up!

I agree. And some will argue that most 17-18 olds are more mature than yours truly. Actually, I was probably a lot more mature then than I am now. Remember, growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional!

Most kids are a lot smarter than us older people give them credit for. A little kid in my neighborhood told me this:
Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says, 'I've lost my electron.' The other says, 'Are you sure?' The first replies, 'Yes, I'm positive.'
