I've recently bought some coins, but I have little experience grading ancients. I would appreciate any help and advice!

I will be posting some of them in the next days - I hope it's the right forum Category.

Thank you!

Silver Stater, Istros (400-350BC), 5.634g, AMNG 416

I know nothing about grading ancients but that won't stop me from commenting!

This piece is obviously pretty worn. If it were a modern coin I'd guess a grade no higher than Fine. As such I don't think it should cost too much. One of these in slightly better condition sold in a lot of five comparable Greek coins at Heritage in 2018. The total price was $456, for an average cost of $91 per coin. Going back to 2006, I see a very attractive example graded ICG AU-50 went for $253. I presume they don't come up for sale very often.

On the plus side, your piece seems to have nice surfaces, with no corrosion and few marks considering the level of wear. It's an appealing example of an ancient silver coin.

Thank you very much for your insight, Jaobler! much appreciated!

Indeed it is quite worn but also still has some character in my opinion. I picked it up with a bunch of other ancients so I got a nice discount. Works out at 32-35$ for this one.

The link you've sent doesn't seem to work (?), but thanks for checking it!
