What you have is a previously Encased Coin which was used to be either a key chain or a pendant and now it is considered damaged.

A broadstrike is a coin that was struck without the collar, the retaining device, in place. The collar is what holds the planchet in place and as a result keeps the coin round. If the planchet is struck without the collar in place you will get a coin that is not round. Sometimes this is very noticeable, other times less so, but always it's going to be present.

Your coin appears round in the photos, which means it can't be a broadstrike. You could perhaps put the coin under another cent and photograph it directly from above to see if any part sticks out. If so, post those photos.

If not, you don't have a broadstruck coin.

Absent any evidence the coin is out of round, the coin having previously been encased makes the most sense.

Husker402;

When Tonnioc mentions ENCASE, he isn't referring to a plastic holder, he is referring to a carnival token with a coin encapsulated in the center for a souvenir.

The obverse to me appears deliberate damage, the reverse I'm not positive. Encapsulated not positive. I'll wait for more comments.

Dan
