I went to a coin dealer for the first time. I bought some old half dollar coins and a quarter for my first silver collection. I paid $48.75 for seven walking liberties (90%)and one quarter also (90%).The spot price at the time was $18.10. Was that a decent price?

One of the coin grading companies has an app that will tell you the base metal value of coins. 7 Walking Liberty half dollars comes to $45.22 and a Washington quarter (pre-64) comes to 3.23. So, you basically paid spot. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Dealers usually charge spot plus a premium in my experience. Curious to see what others say.

Yep.
If I did my math correctly you paid slightly UNDER spot.

Nice work @djl. I know that these are "junk" coins, but how about posting a couple pics of your favorite coin from this purchase?

I only buy below spot for ASW scrap silver coins.

They come as part of numismatic job lots at public auction.
There has to be some coin other than the scrap ASW bullion that I may be interested in the lot.
Doesn't happen often.
I don't particularly go looking for such opportunities. This sort of opportunity has to appear to be quite obvious, to catch my interest.

I also enjoy collecting 90% silver and filling up the clear plastic coin tubes. Looks like you paid an even 13x face for your coins. That is roughly what my silver guy has been charging. I think my guy was at 13.25 a couple of weeks ago.
