Actually this happens on the outside edges of devices from the strike. The strike makes a hole in the plating and starts the zinc re-acting with the air under the plating. It makes it rise and later exposes more of the zinc and it is just a down hill ride after that. The mark to the right of the T shows even a very small hole can start this reaction. Happens. Even on mint marks. Opens/rises/falls from contact from circulating.
