I've held onto this coin for sometime. I've always guessed it to be PMD but have kept it because, well, it just keeps me thinking it could have been something else. My eye always goes back to the "R" in America because even with the "gouge" I can still see the "R" in full and that leaves me to think that the "gouge" was there prior to the strike. What do you guys think? My ears...err eyes are open to all feedback. Thank you in advance.

Looks like a struck through debris or a lamination issue. If it were coin contact, you would not see the ghost letters in the affected area. On a struck through debris or a lamination, that area falls off the coin after the strike or during circulation.

I like to explain what I see, rather than give a yes or no answer . I prefer to show/highlight what I see. Seeing leaves a better memory aid.
