1943 Penny. Is This Normal Wear? - Coin Community Forum

kosmos88 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 10/01/2019 01:40 am I have a 1943 penny. I noticed a couple of things. One is that the 4 is completely worn out. It might be natural wear, but I would assume that would happen at 1 or the 3. Also, maybe the 'L' in Liberty, seems to be touching right on the edge. However, that might be normal wear. Any thoughts? The weak 4 in the date is most likely caused by a partial Grease Fill on the die in that area. The recess on the die that creates the 4 was filled with foreign material, so the number didn't strike properly. The L touching the rim is seen commonly on Lincoln cents. It is due to Die Deterioration. Over time, the pressure from striking so many coins causes the elements on the die to drift outward. Eventually, it may cause the letters to touch the rim. This can happen on any mass-produced coin. I hope that helps.
