This appears to have been stamped during minting. For starters, looks like same metal used, then checking around the edge of reverse it appears to have diagonal imprints across denticles, almost like it was double strike during minting. There is also a die crack under PENN in PENNY. The date appears to be scrubbed out - was this a reason to stamp the coin as cancelled? Is that what EX 17 means? Also there looks like the beginning of another number/letter before "E" on left side edge and also after "7" right on the edge.

I think it's post mint damage - looks like it's been in a vice with a couple of other things.

A possibility Mr T, that would have been tremendous pressure - but why is the dot II dot D after ELIZABETH still raised? Wouldn't the pressure of a vice flattened EVERYTHING that was raised? Not forgetting the die crack under PENN...

I believe it's called a counterstamp and I would guess it stands for Exodus 1:7

I think it was a bit more complicated, with a stationary mold on the obverse and with the "Ex 17" pressed into it through the reverse. The dot would mushroom before it disappeared.

... very handy if the half pennies "... kept on multiplying and growing mightier at an extraordinary rate, so that the land became filled with them." Maybe I should bury this half penny in the garden Gincoin43.

That's a decent thought

But if that's the go you be betterof giving it to someone Imo.

I had originally thought Exodus 1:7 because of the time period.

I also like your view.

Here is a third:

Of course this is all conjecture.

If the line of travel is the same angle(direction) on the obverse and reverse, then I think we have a 2 piece counterstamp "jig" withe the reverse helping to press the obverse into the obverse jig and stopping the pressure before the details sitting on top of the 7 are flattened out completly.......PMD..just my 2 cents (or four 1/2 cents)

Greasy Fingers - why would somebody make this counterstamp? Yes it is the same direction on both sides. Does this mean it goes in the bin or is it worth something? Wish I knew what EX 17 stood for...

@Gincoin43 I took the gamble and put this on ebay as you noted there are a few 'counterstamp' collectors out there. Wow! I didn't expect to have so much interest and bids. And it's still 8 days to go. I must admit it is an attractive and mysterious coin.
