I had this big, rather cruddy looking Byzantine follis sitting around and was going to post it as part of a lot of coins on ebay, when I took another look at it.

I had assumed it was Justinian I, but after doing some research on VCoins and Wildwinds, I couldn't find another example of a Justinian I follis without a cross in the right obverse field.

Also, the part of the obverse legend which is visible doesn't look to read NVS P P AVG, which is what you would expect with Justinian I.

I know very little about Byzantine coins, so I thought I'd see if someone could identify this one for me. Is it a Justinian I and I'm not seeing it correctly, or is it another ruler?

It is 33 mm. in diameter and weighs 11.23 grams.

Thanks for any help.

Doing some more research - Could the first letters of the remaining legend possibly by BER and this is a coin of Maurice Tiberius?

That's just a guess on my part.

Yes, looks to me like a probable Maurice Tiberius, similar to SB 494 on this page

http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sb/i.html

Wildwinds says there are 348 known varieties of this coin.

@PG, I agree with Maurice Tiberius and from what I can see of the exergue on the rev, it looks like CON (for Constantinople), so yes Sear 494 is as good of a guess as any. I see the ANNO to the left of the big letter M, but can't make out the regnal year or the officina. These are often overstruck on older Folles, so perhaps that explains some of the lack of clarity. I'm interested to see what Ron thinks about this one.
